2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz WiFi: Which Should You Use?
Use 5 GHz when you are close to the router — it is faster and less crowded. Use 2.4 GHz for devices far away or behind several walls — it reaches further but is slower and suffers more interference.
| 2.4 GHz | 5 GHz | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Lower | Higher |
| Range | Longer, better through walls | Shorter |
| Interference | High (neighbours, microwaves, Bluetooth) | Low |
| Best for | Far rooms, smart devices, CCTV | Phones, laptops, TVs near router |
How do I switch bands?
Many dual-band routers show two network names (for example "Home" and "Home_5G"). Connect to the 5G one. If there is only one name, the router chooses automatically ("band steering"); you can split them in the router settings.
What about 6 GHz (WiFi 6E/7)?
6 GHz offers even more clean channels, but needs a compatible router and device, and has even shorter range. Check whether it is permitted and supported locally before buying.
Frequently asked questions
Does 5G WiFi mean 5G mobile?
No. "5G" on a WiFi name means the 5 GHz band, not 5G mobile networks.
