What is upload speed?
Upload speed is how fast your connection sends data to the internet, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). It matters every time you appear on a video call, send a file on WhatsApp, deliver work to a client, push code, or upload a video to YouTube or TikTok.
How much upload speed do I need?
| Task | Minimum upload |
|---|---|
| WhatsApp / voice calls | 0.5 Mbps |
| HD video call (Zoom, Google Meet, Teams) | 3 Mbps |
| Live streaming in 1080p | 6–8 Mbps |
| Uploading large files daily (designers, video editors) | 20+ Mbps |
Why is my upload so much slower than my download?
DSL (including most copper PTCL broadband), cable and 4G are asymmetric: they are built to give far more download than upload. Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connections from providers such as Nayatel, StormFiber and PTCL Flash Fiber can offer much higher upload, sometimes equal to download. If you work online, upload speed is often the best reason to move to fiber.
Tips for faster uploads
- Use a LAN cable — WiFi upload drops sharply with distance.
- Pause cloud sync (Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud) while on calls.
- Upload large files outside the evening peak (roughly 8 pm to midnight).
