WiFi Speed Test

Run the test next to your router, then in the room where internet feels slow. The difference shows how much speed your WiFi loses.

A standard test takes about 20 seconds and can use 100–400 MB on fast connections.

How to test WiFi speed correctly

  1. Baseline: connect a laptop to the router with a LAN cable and run the test. This is roughly the speed your ISP delivers.
  2. Near the router: disconnect the cable, stay within 2 metres of the router on WiFi and test again.
  3. Problem room: go to the room where internet feels slow and test a third time.

Cable and near-router results close together, but the far room much slower? Your WiFi coverage is the problem. All three slow? The problem is the line or the ISP.

How much speed should WiFi lose?

Expect to lose some speed on WiFi, especially on older 2.4 GHz routers. Losing more than half your speed in the next room usually means interference, thick walls (common in brick and concrete Pakistani homes) or a router placed on the floor or inside a cabinet.

Quick fixes

  • Put the router high up, in a central spot and in the open.
  • Use the 5 GHz network for phones and laptops near the router.
  • Change the WiFi channel if neighbours' networks overlap.
  • Add a mesh system or a wired access point for multi-storey homes.
